Primary Service/product
Veterinary physiotherapy is a science-based profession, which takes a holistic approach to each patient by providing functional assessment in conjunction with traditional veterinary medicine. Physiotherapy for animals can be utilised as part of a multidisciplinary team and especially alongside veterinary care to help in the treatment or long-term management of many orthopaedic and/or neurological illnesses and injuries. It can assist rehabilitation of the animal, with the primary aims of reducing pain, improving functional movement, and restoring normal muscle condition and function. Physiotherapy can also be used for performance development of the animal athlete, helping to try to minimise the risk of injury whilst maximising the performance of competitive or working animals. This is achieved with a combination of the following:
1. Manual therapies: these includes a wide variety of different massage and soft tissue techniques, acupressure, joint mobilisations or manipulations, myofascial release and stretches.
2. Electro Therapies: the use of therapeutic machines such as therapeutic ultrasound, laser, pulsed electromagnetic field therapy, TENS and NMES.
3. Remedial exercise programmes: individual exercise programmes are utilised to encourage functional movement patterns and improve muscle strength, endurance, suppleness, proprioception, balance and stability as required.
4. Management advice: owners may need additional advice on therapeutic handling of their injured animal, or perhaps how to make appropriate adaptations to an animal's home environment and general management in order to assist in their rehabilitation.
5. Orthotics: when indicated, orthotics can be selected to aid support the animal pre/post-op. Bespoke advice, guidance and fittings available.
